Transport Research Institute Napier University: Annual Report 1995/96

Transport research at Napier University has undergone a considerable change over the last year, through the creation of the Transport Research Institute (TRI) which brings together for the first time transport-related activities across the university supported by significant central funding. In addition to staff located within the Department of Civil & Transportation Engineering (whose research was reported on here last year), groups of staff from the Departments of Computer Studies, Building & Surveying and Economics, plus individuals from several other departments, are now being united within the TRI. The official 'launch' of the TRI took place at the Royal Society of Edinburgh in May. Initially, the organisation of the Institute is through the formation of five groups: Transport Informatics, Transport Economics and Planning, Transport Construction, Maintenance and Repair, Transport Environment and Transport Modelling, each group being headed by a senior member of staff. However, it is anticipated that these groups will be joined by new groups undertaking different areas of research as the Institute grows further. Continued and expanding collaboration with industrial partners is seen as an essential element in the development of the TRI. The university appointed Malcolm Buchanan, Senior Director of the consultants Colin Buchanan and Partners, to assist in the formation of the TRI and to become the Chairman of its Board of Directors, the other members of which will come both from within and outside the university.
