Exploiting technology

The driving principle behind the National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) project was the HA's intention to exploit technology to improve its management of the core road network and provide tangible benefits to road users, the economy and environment. Despite the existence of police control offices and existing traffic monitoring equipment on parts of the road network there was no coordinated national system to allow a holistic management of the core road network. In order to provide comprehensive monitoring of the core road network a myriad of new traffic monitoring equipment has been installed, including over 500 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera sites and almost 1500 inductive loop sites across the core network. TiS has installed an additional 100 new roadside Variable Message Signs (VMS) to add to the existing population, providing TiS with access to over 350 VMS at key decision points on the network to disseminate information to drivers across England.
