Delivering strategic traffic management services

Responsibility for the operation and management of England's strategic road network (most motorways and major roads) lies with the Highways Agency (HA). Although currently comprising less than 4% of the English road network these arterial routes carry 34% of the total road traffic and 67% of road freight. The National Traffic Control Centre Project (NTCC) will operate over the nationally important parts of this network, identified in England as the core network. This is set out in the Government's White Paper on the Future of Transport and encompasses arterial motorways and major roads. As the volume of traffic on the English road network continues to increase, it creates ever increasing financial burdens on business, impacts on our environment and prevents the efficient movement of people and goods. The task of the Highways Agency is to ensure that these strategic routes permit free moving traffic and safe journeys, in spite of increasing demand for travel on the network, which is expected to grow by up to one third over the next ten years.
