ITIS is a leading provider of transport, traffic and travel data, established to provide dynamic and predictive in- formation users and operators of the British road and transport system. ITIS generates quality traffic information data by combining journalistic traffic data from AA Road-watch with data generated by the company's Floating Vehicle Data system (FVD). FVDTM is a process and technology for the collection, analysis and forecasting of journey times using speed and location data directly from a sample of vehicles as an alternative to fixed roadside sensors such as number plate readers. The key to developing any commercial FVDTM system is to determine the number of vehicles required to give a credible service. ITIS have developed the concept of the Floating Vehicle Data Unit based on vehicle mileage travelled and driving patterns. Using this measure an average driver has a value of 1 FVD unit, with a business driver worth 3 FVD units and a truck/coach having a value of 30 FVD units.
