Mantled in mist-the importance of evidence in speed camera debate

On 10th November 2004, the Royal Statistical Society held an open meeting on the effectiveness of speed cameras, sponsored by Buchanan Computing. The effectiveness of speed cameras forms part of a wider debate on automatic law enforcement and even on the way in which society seeks to apportion rights and responsibilities in respect of different road users. Although acknowledging the wider debate in terms of enforcement in opening the meeting, Professor Frank Kelly of the Statistics Laboratory at Cambridge (and research advisor to the DfT) also commented on the way rather more heat than light seemed to be generated when discussing speed cameras.
