New tape will identify 'crash-friendly' posts

The question of how roadside equipment could be quickly and easily identified as being passively safe has been around for some time but was brought into sharp focus when the British EuroRAP Programme announced that it would be undertaking a survey of Britain's main roads. The surveyors, who travel along the designated routes and score the road on a scale of 1 to 4, taking into account various risk factors, looking at a sign post without safety barrier or lighting column would be unaware whether or not the post or lighting column that had been installed was passively safe simply by looking at it. Some products, such as those supplied by Lattix, are immediately obvious but there are other products on the market, such as those from Jerol and Nidal, where the posts or lighting columns look the same as conventional products although their performance is quite different. Clearly any local authority or Highways Agency maintenance agent which has installed a passively safe post will want it to be clearly identified, not just to surveyors for the EuroRAP programme in future years, but also for asset management and inventory purposes.
