Step back only three years and few would have heard of passive safety and the concept of engineering roadsides to reduce the risk of injury in single-vehicle collisions. But thanks to events such as Mott MacDonald's passive safety seminar in London, and a Highways Agency (HA) Technical Advice Note, passively safe sign posts, traffic signal poles and lighting columns are becoming an increasingly familiar sight along the UK's high speed roads.
