The role of ITS-based technologies in incident management

Effective incident management is a continuing area of concern for highway authorities and operators. Technologies that can help avert accidents, or speed up the investigation of them, have important roles to play in realising the EU's aim of reducing road deaths across the continent. Under the aegis of the EU-supported STREETWISE (Seamless TRavel Environment for Efficient Transport in the Western ISles of Europe) Euro-Regional project, the Northern Ireland Roads Service has reviewed develop- ments in ITS-based incident management techniques in the fields of technology and traffic management improvements and inter-agency working for inclusion in a 'Compendium of Best Practice'. Four relevant examples of technology improvements have emerged in the areas covered by STREETWISE - the UK member countries of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and the Republic of Ireland - and more widely across the EU.
