Tangible benefits of ESA's road platform

Proven feasibility of urban satellite-positioning-based pricing and more accurate incident detection have emerged as tangible benefits from the European Space Agency (ESA)-supported ARMAS (Active Road Management Assisted by Satellite) project. ESA wanted a platform that would equip road authorities to investigate the performance of space-derived technologies. ARMAS phase III (see panel) has already tested road demand management applications including road pricing, traffic management, pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) insurance, incident management and school bus safety, and completed trials in The Netherlands, Portugal and the Republic of Ireland.
