After a major collision, incident examinations of the scene are earned out to establish the road layout and the accurate position of vehicles and debris which can be used as evidence at a later date. The equipment that has traditionally been used has meant lengthy closures because tools have not been particularly user friendly and it has taken at least two officers to complete the task. In Staffordshire, the time taken to complete the survey and reopen the motorway has been reduced by up to 50% as a result of the deployment of a combined GPS Robotic Surveying System, supplied to the local Forensic Collision Investigation Unit of Staffordshire Police by Optima.
