摘要

Motorists give cyclists less room when there is a cycle lane - this is the conclusion of research conducted at the University of Leeds. Using a bicycle equipped to measure the distance of passing vehicles Ciaran Meyers, a postgrad at the University's Institute for Transport Studies, and his supervisor Dr John Parkin undertook the study on roads with and without cycle lanes. The results show that when there is a cycle lane motorists are less likely to provide a safe and comfortable passing distance to the cyclists. Dr Parkin of Bolton University and Visiting Fellow at ITS Leeds said that in the presence of a cycle lane, a driver is likely to drive between the cycle lane line and the centre line in a position which is appropriate for the visible highway horizontal geometry ahead of the driver.
