MOTORCYCLISTS TOP PRIORITY LIST

Protecting motorcyclists, who represent 20% of fatalities but just 1% of traffic, has been flagged up as a top priority in the Department for Transport's latest consultation document, A Safer Way. Many of these fatalities take place as the result of collisions between motorcyclists and crash barriers - no fewer than 758 KSI between 2003 and 2007- many as a result of colliding at high speed with the upright barrier support poles with the majority involving nearside barriers.rnA study in the US by Virginia Tech found that while motorcyclists comprised only 2% of the number of motorised vehicles they accounted for 42% of the fatalities resulting from guardrail collisions and that 1 in 8 motorcyclists who hit a barrier were fatally injured.
