Small Sized City Case Study: Truro, Cornwall

Truro is a city in Cornwall in the south west of England. It is the only city in the county and is the centre for administration, leisure and retail. With a population of just over 20,000 an employed population of 40,000 and an increase in tourists during the summer months taking the total population on a daily basis up to 70,000, the city suffers from many of the transport problems which affect many urban centres in the UK such as traffic congestion, parking capacity issues and a general lack of high quality public transport provision. The city is forecast to grow significantly over the next few decades and this growth will significantly exacerbate these problems. Local government has identified these issues and is developing plans and strategies to alleviate them. For this purpose it was identified that a suitable modelling tool was required to assist in the development of these plans. This paper discusses the development of the model with a particular focus on the transferability of data from existing models and sources, the importance of parking and the difficulties associated with modelling it correctly.
