New network will promote sustainable mobility

Since the CIVITAS initiative was first launched by the European Commission in 2002, seven cities in the UK and Ireland have taken part, between them conducting a wide range of projects around the theme of creating sustainable, clean and energy efficient urban transport systems.rnPreston in Lancashire was a demonstration city under CIVITAS 11 which ran from 2005 to 2009. Chris Hadfield, European Project Manager with Lancashire County Council, says that what started as a pilot involving hybrid vehicles and general carbon reductions swelled over the four years to include things as diverse as clear zones, car sharing, public transport information, personalised travel planning and a freight quality partnership.
