Safety first in Hatfield test

The Hatfield Tunnel, which carries the A1(M) motorway under the Gallerias shopping and leisure centre at the core of the Hertfordshire town, was recently the scene of a highly-detailed, seven-hour, night-time exercise set up to test Highways Agency (HA) and local emergency response procedures for dealing with a serious road traffic incident. The scenario decided on was a multi-vehicle collision resulting in a disastrous fire.
