摘要

Fewer than a third of Britain's motorists think that speed cameras are only used at sites with a bad record of crashes and injuries and over half think that raising money is their primary aim. These findings emerged from the latest research report from the road safety charity, IAM, Public Opinions of Speed Cameras. However, 81% of all respondents think that speed cameras contributed to falling road deaths over the past decade and nearly all respondents think that road deaths and serious injuries would increase if cameras were turned off. The survey found that 70% of motorists agree that speed awareness courses are a better idea than prosecution with the greatest support among 17-24 year-olds. There was less support for using the income from these courses to fund cameras - 48% supported this notion but 34% actively disagreed. Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, said that prosecuting and fining drivers does not improve driver awareness of the hazards of excessive speed. 'Training would reduce the number of casualties and Drosecutions.'
