UN launches Decade of Action for Road Safety to end needless loss of life

The first Decade of Action for Road Safety was launched by the United Nations on May 1st. Road accidents, which kill an estimated 1.3 million people a year, represent the ninth leading cause of death in the world today and are already the biggest killer of people aged between 15 and 29. Between 20 million and 50 million others receive non-fatal injuries every year. The problem is worsening and by the end of this decade the number of deaths is projected to reach 1.9 million per year.
