The influence and impact of TfL's traffic modelling guidance

INTRODUCTION In support of the Mayor's Transport Strategy, the primary goal of TfL's London Streets division is to smooth traffic flow in London, by assuring more reliable journeys for road users. Traffic modelling plays an increasingly vital role in this objective and the TMG and MAP help to ensure high quality and accurate delivery. MAP defines a structured process for scheme approval and sets 'technical benchmarks' through which a traffic model should be developed to meet acceptable standards. The TMG (currently version 3) provides guidance that informs interested parties on the most effective approach required to comply with standards established through MAP. Figure 1 illustrates how the documents function together to provide a framework for understanding all traffic modelling processes undertaken with or for TfL. MAP and the TMG complement each other to provide a transparent signposted route from initial scope through to a fully modelled and assessed proposal.
