Smart road trains on the way?

The UK-led SARTRE (SAfe Road TRains for the Environment) project is claiming successful completion of its first on-road trials of automated 'platoons' of vehicles, a concept aimed at contributing to greater safety and fewer emissions on European motorways. The test fleet consists of a lead lorry followed by up to three entirely autonomously-driven cars, running -using specially-developed control algorithms - at speeds of up to 90 km/h, with 6m gaps at the most between individual vehicles - on unadapted roads.
