Making traffic signal equipment accessible

The obligations placed on designers and clients under CDM Regulations provide a compelling argument to examine the benefits that developments in traffic signal equipment can make towards improving accessibility at signal installations. The traditional working practices should be challenged, in order to reduce the need to routinely work at height on site. It may not be possible to achieve all the measures suggested, especially in some challenging urban environments, although the various issues should still be considered during the design phase to incorporate benefits where possible. Features which minimise the need for routine maintenance work, not only improve safety, but can also have a major impact on maintenance and operational budgets as well.
