What is all this about social media? Even my local village policeman now has a Twitter feed! Research indicates that Europeans now spend more time online than they do reading newspapers or magazines. It has been estimated that almost a quarter of time spent online is spent on social networking sites and that this proportion of time has rapidly increased over the past three years. So, although social networking is still a relatively new phenomenon, it can now be regarded as mainstream and a number of industry sectors have recognised its potential as a cost-effective, popular and relatively sophisticated form of communication. Indeed, in crisis situations such as political unrest or travel chaos, social networking has proved invaluable.
