UK Department for Transport statistics show that, during the year ending March 2014, there were 189,880 reported road casualties of all degrees of severity, 1% higher than in the previous year. Over the same period, motor traffic levels rose by 3%. There were 1,750 reported road deaths (4% up) within a tally of 24,160 killed or seriously injured (up 2%). The UK's insured fleet of motor vehicles totals over 27.5 million. In 2012, insurers received 2.9 million claims, on which they paid out an average of £19.1 million every day. The underwriting cost to the motor insurance industry, which has not made an underwriting profit since 1994, was £286 million.
