Traffic managers face multiple challenges: busy roads, budgetary restrictions and ever changing technology. There are issues of unprecedented resourcing constraints and the loss of highly skilled traffic management staff - all contributory factors that make maintaining a high performing traffic network more difficult than ever before. Meanwhile, the expectations of the travelling public are as high as ever and with the demand on the network increasing with expansions in housing and commercial developments the problem doesn't seem to be easing off. Future technologies, such as co-operative systems and increased traveller information, are aiming to encourage a model shift to public and autonomous transport, but the traffic network demands remain.
