The Bus Lane Enforcement Cameras Project: The London Area Scheme

The first stage of the Bus Lane Enforcement Cameras Project, through Pilot Project field-trials, demonstrated that it was feasible to use mobile bus-mounted cameras and roadside cameras for the enforcement of bus lanes. Various issues were also identified and explored, and recommendations made for the legal and organisational requirements for the operation of the cameras. The second stage of the Project, the Area Scheme, has to date subjected the technology to market testing and has brought the concepts to reality. The cameras are now operating and with the experience gained it will be possible to identify where new technology coming to the market is able to improve the operation of bus-lane cameras and where the potential for such improvements lie. The project has significantly extended the use of unattended traffic enforcement cameras by developing concepts to allow their use for complex offences and by introducing mobile cameras. Many of the concepts, techniques and developments will not only help to improve compliance with bus lanes, but will also advance bus priority in general and improve enforcement techniques and procedures for both attended and unattended traffic cameras as well as broadening their use.
