The authors have developed an integrated spot-welding robot system as an essential component of spot-welding technology based on the concept that integrating the functions of a robot and welding machine would result in significantly enhanced performance. In this paper, we first report on the development of the spot-welding integrating welding process and robot trajectory control systems by means of an electrical servomotor which functions as a pressure actuator. They subsequently describe and evaluate the practical application of this integrated welding system. This spot-welding system has produced dramatic improvements: 30% improvement in energy conservation; 30% improvement in spot-welding efficiency in terms of productivity; 20% reduction of splash and burrs in terms of welding quality; and 20% reduction in noise.
