The town planning system is currently on trial, and at stake is the importance we, as a society, attach to the location and form of our built environment. Does the system really need a re-boot and if so what would it look like? (7)This introduction serves as the mission statement for Hamish Barrell's investigation of the challenges facing Britain's planning system in the early twenty-first century, which he sets out to chart by tracing the somewhat bureaucratic and officious workings of the modern planning system back to the key philosophical, economic and political debates which lie at the heart of planning as an activity.
