The Crimean War (1853-1856) was the first modern war for several reasons: including special correspondents, nurses, doctors and war tourists eager to witness the armed conflict (Royle, 2000). However, the phenomenon of war tourism is more ancient as illustrated in the innovative and thought provoking volume edited by Richard Butler and Wantanee Suntikul. It is a first attempt to put together a book on tourism and war investigating such complex issues as destination development closed to a conflict zone (Suntikul), controversial image of a neutral country (Mueller and Hoppler) or tourism in a Demilitarized Zone (Lee and Kang).
