Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism as Motors for Development

The United Nations, during its Millennium Summit in 2000 identified some global challenges to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized through the ST-EP initiative that Tourism can play a significant role for some of these UN global goals, addressing extreme poverty and hunger, gender equality, environmental sustainability and global partnership respectively. With the 2005 UN World Summit in New York, UNWTO adopted the Declaration on "Harnessing Tourism for the Millennium Development Goals" where tourism was seen as a major force for socio-economic development and a huge involvement of several stakeholders was strongly suggested: "governments, international and bilateral development agencies, corporations and civil society (should) further their efforts in support of the tourism sector through mobilizing additional resources, afford tourism greater priority in development assistance programmes and poverty alleviation strategies, promote public-pri-vate partnerships and good governance."
