An Evaluation of Land Use Controls in the Lake Biwa Watershed from the Perspective of Agricultural Environment

In the marginal regions of metropolitan areas, there has been a tendency in recent years for the number of offices and residences to increase in response to the development of transportation networks. Urbanization has increased rapidly in many areas, therefore resulting in associated land use problems, such as the diffusion of urban areas and urban sprawl in the border regions of metropolitan areas. This rapid urbanization also enhances the possibility of aggravating competition between urban land use and other land uses (e.g., farmland, water surface, forests). The reconciliation of the conflicts between the needs of urban areas and other types of land uses, therefore, is one of the most important land use problems in the marginal regions of urban regions.
