Class ER1 EMUs to enter service in September

Swedish rolling stock company Transitio has ordered 33 4-car Class ER1 double-deck EMUs from Stadler, which will be leased by Maelardalen transport authority MAELAB (Maelardalstrafiken - see also TR EU 272 and 276). Deliveries and test runs have been ongoing since spring 2018. From September the units will start to replace loco-hauled trains on the Orebro-Eskilstuna-Stockholm-Uppsala, Hallsberg-Katrineholm-Stockholm, Norrkoeping-Nykoeping-Stockholm and Sala-Vaesteras-Eskilstuna-Katrineholm-Linkoping routes. The trains will run under the Maelartag brand. MAELAB will provide the trains to the operator that has the contract to operate the service. SJ currently runs these interregional trains under a transitional agreement. When all trains are delivered in 2021, a new agreement will have to be signed. The procurement of this operating agreement starts in 2019 and will take effect from 12 December 2021.
