Jim brown was the per-rnsonification of Radio Free Europe (RFE) at its best-liberal-minded, intellectual and always aware that it was our listeners who bore the burden of Europe's division. A respected scholar and gentle soul, he was the antithesis of a propagandist-yet he led what may have been the sin-rngle most effective institution of the Cold War.
