NIASPAN is a prescription medication used along with diet when a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and other non-drug measures alone have not been successful.rnNIASPAN is used to increase good (HDL) cholesterol and lower bad (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides.rnNIASPAN can be used in combination with lovastatin or simvastatin to improve cholesterol levels when taking NIASPAN, simvastatin or lovastatin alone is not enough.rnNIASPAN is also used to reduce the risk of recurrent heart attacks in people with a history of heart attack and high cholesterol.rnIn patients with high cholesterol and coronary artery disease, NIASPAN, when used with a bile acid binding resin, another cholesterol medication, has been shown to slow down or reduce the build-up of plaque in your arteries.rnNo additional benefit of NIASPAN on heart disease has been demonstrated when used with simvastatin or lovastatin over and above that shown for niacin, simvastatin or lovastatin when used alone.
