In mid-1950s japan, during the yearsrnafter the country's devastating defeat in World War II, Prime Minister Ichiro Hatoyama believed his island nation should not become too subservient to the U.S. and, to make his point, flew to Moscow to normalize relations with the U.S.S.R. But despite Hatoyama's views, Japan locked itself firmly into the U.S. orbit, becoming America's key Asian ally. Now Ichiro's grandson Yukio is taking a shot. In a major turning point for modern Japan, Yukio Hatoyama's Democratic Party of Japan won a landslide victory in elections last year, tossing out the staunchly pro-U.S. Liberal Democrats, who had reigned almost uninterrupted since 1955.
