It would be, after all, an unprecedented feat in the nation's 65-year history: every previous elected government was brought down by a military coup or subtler means. And yet it's March 2013, and the government has survived its full five-year term. But there's much more work to do. Although the government, led by President Asif Ali Zardari, has made notable advances-allowing dissenting opinions and passing important constitutional amendments-the country faces persistent threats: flood damage, terrorism, power struggles, a sluggish economy, insurgencies, tensions with India and more.
