SUPPORTING FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT DEVELOPMENT IN INDONESIA

Indonesia's forests are still facing many problems such as forest fires, illegal logging and conversion to plantations and agricultural lands. To address these problems, the Government of Indonesia has made a fundamental change in forest management policy whereby the establishment and operationalization of forest management units (FMU) are required to ensure better management of remaining forests. While FMUs have been promoted for several years, they are identified as a priority for the period 2015-2019. The Government has set a target to establish 600 FMUs by the end of 2019. In order for FMUs to operate effectively the development of strong institutions and competent human resources of the FMUs is needed.
