FIRST RECORD OF EURASIAN OTTER (Lutra lutra L.) IN RAJIV GANDHI ORANG NATIONAL PARK, ASSAM

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) historically occurs throughout the northeast India (Ruiz-Olmo et al., 2008.) This species has been reported from Barail Reserved Forest (RF), Innerline RF, Manas National Park (NP), Nameri NP and Kaziranga NP by Choudhary (1997). In this note, I present a new sighting record of Eurasian otter in Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park. On 20 April 2008, I, along with a forest staff official (Lachit Borgayari), went to Dighali beel (= wetland) to install a camera trap in front of an otter holt (N26° 32' 17.1" E92° 19' 41.1") on the bank of the wetland. The long rectangular wetland is flooded by the river Brahmaputra during the monsoon.
