Boning up on Bustiers

Compared to all other garment types, I find the bustier-a tightly fitted upper body garment most often used for evening-wear and bridal gar-ments-to be the most challenging, and therefore the most exhilarating to create. Properly constructed, a bustier supports the bust, adds definition to the waist, acts as the skeleton for the fashion fabric, secures the weight of an attached skirt, and otherwise elevates a form-fitting bodice to designer or couture status. Whether you use a purchased or custom-de- signed pattern, before you can perfect the look and fit of any bustier, it's necessary to understand and master the logistics of its construction. This is because to make compatible fabric and design choices you need to anticipate how you'll support the layers and incorporate the boning. Follow along as I lead you through the layers.
