PERHAPS THE MOST FREquently made and often cited recommendation from doctors is to "take two acetylsalicylic acid tablets and call me in the morning." Doesn't ring a bell? Perhaps that is because we used its chemical name rather than the more common acronym "aspirin." Aspirin is a coined name-a combination of "a" for the acetyl group, "s" for the salicylic group, and "spir" for the spirea plant, the source of salicylic acid.
