Design of screwed connections in cold-formed steels in shear

Experiments on screwed connections in shear were carried out at the University of Sydney using 2 or 3 selfdrilling screws connecting high strength cold-formed steel sheets. Different types of screws and various thickness combinations were used in order to investigate the bearing and tilting failure behaviour of screwed connections. The results are compared against standards and specifications from Australia, USA and Europe. From the comparisons, revised design equations based on the Australian Standard/New Zealand AS/NZS 4600:2018 are proposed. The equations are verified using data from other international data sets of screwed connection experiments in shear. The data are used to calculate new capacity reduction factors, which are higher than the current factor in AS/NZS 4600:2018 for screwed connections in bearing and tilting. Based on the comparison, a revised capacity reduction factor is proposed.
