Selective growth of conjugated polymer thin films by the vapor deposition polymerization

We present a selective growth technique for polymer thin films using patterned hydrophobic/hydrophilic surface treatments. On a glass substrate surface, where a hydrophobic treatment was applied using hexamethyl-disilazane, a hydrophilic SiO thin film was deposited through a metal mask by the vacuum evaporation to form a hydrophilic/hydrophobic pattern. A poly-azomethine (poly-AM) film that is a conjugated polymer was grown on the surface by the vapor deposition polymerization using p-phenylenediamine and terephthalaldehyde as reactive source monomers. The poly-AM thin film was selectively grown on the SiO region, that is, on the hydrophilic region, without growth on the hydrophobic region.
