Since the 1950s/1960s, the education and training of civil/structural (c/s) engineers has undergone dramatic changes. It has been largely an evolutionary process, mostly in the best possible way, but reactive rather than proactive with the attention and quality of training varying from one office to another. It is not, therefore, surprising that there is widespread concern as to whether the present-day formation of the c/s engineer is adequate to meet the challenges of the 21st century. We all recognise, for example, the need for the engineer to understand the complexities of building engineering, and the role of financing, project management and information technology in improving the quality of structural DESIGN.
