When you meet Sam Thorburn for the first time, you are immediately aware that here is someone with an apparent endless supply of energy and enthusiasm for life. When your association extends to the realm of engineering you cannot fail to be impressed by the way he channels his energy and enthusiasm into addressing the task at hand, whether it be preparing a lecture, writing a design guide, analysing a problem or simply debating current issues of technical or procedural merit. From an early stage Sam's quest for understanding all things technical was apparent by his preference for dismantling toys to find out how they worked rather that playing with them. It is probable this appetite for understanding and perseverance in analysing problems has set him aside from others in the extent to which he has pushed design solutions towards the limit and monitored performance in use to gain a clearer understanding of the critical issues involved.
