In the last decade, timber-concrete composite construction has found important structural applications, including the refurbishment of existing timber floors, the introduction of new floor types, and as a deck system for timber bridges. In several regions throughout Europe, timber-concrete composites are increasingly being used for such purposes. Despite their advantages, which are discussed below, the construction world in general, and especially the UK, is unacquainted with the use of timber-concrete composites. Design professionals are wary of their unfamiliar behaviour, and unsure of the proposed design methods and data. New Eurocodes and accompanying guidance being produced should alter attitudes to innovations such as this, with change prompted by the desire for more sustainable construction, as well as immediate cost savings and greater efficiency.
