The countdown has already started and important decisions are being made! Chartered engineers involved with the design of building structures must make themselves aware of events taking place in Scotland. Are they interested? If not, they should be. Consultation on the reform of the Scottish Building Control System started in April 2000. The Scottish Executive issued a consultation paper in March 2002 followed by a letter of consultation in July 2003. The Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers were both on the list of those bodies consulted. IStructE's Chief Executive, Dr Keith Eaton made a presentation to the Scottish Executive in June 2002 and has maintained close contact since then. He organised a small team of senior fellows in Scotland to contribute to the development of the reformed system. The members of the team were chartered engineers of both Institutions.
