Background to minimising alkali-silica reaction in concrete

The damaging alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete is rare in most parts of the UK. When it does occur, however, its consequences can range from merely aesthetic to very serious. Therefore, we should always choose a concrete mix with a minimum risk of the occurrence of damaging ASR. However, given that damaging ASR is not common, why am I writing about it?
