The recent dramatic reduction in the number of UK landfill sites which accept hazardous waste has had a major impact on the UK construction industry. Recent research and survey indicate that small businesses need to be more aware of their obligations. Traditionally, landfill costs in the UK have been among the lowest in Europe, and although they have risen over the past 3 years as the Government introduced higher landfill taxes, they remain relatively competitive. This fact, combined with the lack of infrastructure to promote innovation, acts as a significant barrier to the adoption of more sophisticated approaches to waste minimisation and recycling.
