Hard graft in hard hats: developing practical skills

The ultimate construction classroom, the Constructionarium, developed at Imperial College with the help of Chris Wise, is going from strength to strength. Alison Ahearn (Imperial) and Robin Holdsworth (CONSTRUCT) explain. The Constructionarium was founded in 2003 when Stef Stephanou of John Doyle Construction Ltd took up the gauntlet thrown down by Chris Wise, for industry to make a difference to engineering education. Chris had been reporting on his work as Professor of Creative Design at Imperial College London to a meeting of the Ove Arup Foundation which had initially sponsored his work at Imperial. The idea for teaching students about civil engineering by letting them do real construction was developed.
