Visitors from Singapore search for steel expertise

A group of 26 engineers, academics, developers and local and central government officials from Singapore recently came to the UK to learn about the UK steel industry. They visited several engineering and architectural consultants as well as fabricators in London and Manchester and took a ride on the London Eye (photo below). Traditionally Singapore has used mainly concrete for new buildings, with steel only for 10%. But according to one of the visitors, Tian Tain Chong, Director, Singapore's Building and Construction Authority, the need to source other building materials has been prompted by a shortage of sand due to an export ban by main suppliers such as Indonesia. He said that Singapore needs to diversify the materials it uses to reduce its dependence on one type of construction, and to seek more sustainable alternatives.
