President's visit to Singapore

The President participated in the 2-day conference on 'Iconic Structures in Singapore and Asia', organised by the IStructE/IES Joint Division, in addition to meeting members in Singapore. 'It was the most ambitious programme ever put on by the Singapore Joint Division' said IStructE CEO, Dr Keith Eaton. 'It was attended by around 200 people who were treated to excellent presentations on some really iconic structures'. The President gave the opening address and her Presidential Address to the conference banquet where she presented certificates to five new Members and two new Fellows, a Centenary Service Award to Professor Francis Lok and an Honorary Fellowship to IES President and MP Lee Bee Wah, who is a civil engineer at LBW Consulting. She told The Straits Times she was 'happy and humbled by the award', only the 34th in IStructE's history, and hoped it would inspire more students, especially women to take up engineering. Professor C. M. Wang, Chairman IStructE Singapore Division said the award was 'a true recognition of Bee Wah's outstanding contributions to the engineering profession' and 'affirmed the status of women professional engineers'. Dr Eaton said: 'The conference continued the philosophy expounded over the past 2 or 3 years by the Singapore Joint Committee that there should continue to be an increasing collaboration within the Asia region, with meetings being arranged for IStructE members and Divisions within the region. Hence the presence of speakers from China, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand as well as Singapore'.
