As the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT) reported on its visit to the Chinese earthquake zone in Sechuan, the Chinese Government's National Development and Reform Commission published a draft rebuilding plan which will focus on high quality public buildings. An estimated $147bn will be needed to build 4432 schools, 169 hospitals and houses for 3.8M people made homeless by the disaster. A further 2600 school buildings will be strengthened. This is seen as a response to criticisms of corruption and poor building following the large number of schools which were destroyed in the earthquake. The EEFIT team which visited the area was not able to make unrestricted visits to devastated towns, but did see two schools, one being a new structure, which had collapsed.
